Wollam Gardens

Weddings have been blooming at Wollam Gardens since owners Anne Montgomery and Bob Wollam shared their vows on the flower farm in 2015. Since then, couples have been swooning over the romantic 11-acre landscape, set in Virginia’s rolling Northern Piedmont region and cloaked with beautiful flowering perennials, giant oak trees and covered and outdoor gardens. Bob has transformed his dream property over the years, nurturing the land and the historic farmhouse dating back to 1747, adding fields of flowers, a greenhouse, six hoop houses, and an artisanal gathering space made from local fallen timber designed and built by local artist David Braun.

Guests come to the farm to walk through the gardens and cut blossoms, pet the purring cat, curate art and vases, hand-select succulents from the greenhouse and soak up the blissful bucolic vibes. A pioneer for sustainable growing in Virginia, Wollam Gardens grows more than 80 varieties of flowers and sells them at local farmers markets and in the flower farm’s pink flower shack. Opportunities to cut your own flowers, design and order custom arrangements and request special orders are also available.

Bob and Anne welcome couples to fall in love with the flower farm and its beauty, to select farm-grown spring peonies, poppies, tulips and snapdragons or autumn dahlias, zinnia, lisianthus and celosia to build out their dream wedding designs. They welcome couples and their families into their historic farmhouse, offering an inclusive wedding weekend package that opens up the stunning 1747 home and its shared living room and kitchen spaces along with three bedrooms upstairs to sleep eight guests.

Couples host rehearsal dinners, bringing in their favorite caterers and décor and roll right into the wedding day with vendors of their choice. Three picturesque ceremony sites await couples’ personalized touch — an expansive side field, the spacious covered wooden gathering space and a far hill overlooking the flower farm.

“The beauty of Wollam Gardens is that it can be very DIY if you want it to be, you get to pick all of your vendors, design your ceremony and reception spaces and take advantage of gorgeous photography backdrops like the huge wall of blooming viburnum,” says Wollam Gardens event coordinator Megan Roberson.

Cocktail hours unfold in fragrant flourishing hydrangea alley and receptions flow into the open-air wood pavilion, oftentimes with adjacent event tents added to host up to 225 guests. Roberson has seen couples create boho fairylands with hanging lanterns and strung florals, others bringing in lawn games and bar carts.

Floral options are endless and Wollam Gardens’ custom floral designer meets with couples to curate visions and dream up designs, using what’s locally grown and in-season whenever possible. “Our designer can make just about anything happen,” Roberson says.
